HISTORY OF 14TH INTAKE ASSOCIATION

1996

HOW IT BEGAN by Chris Mitchell

On Anzac Day 1996, Brenton (Tink) Tancock for the first time had an idea of a get together of the Intake from when he joined LEEUWIN way back in January 1966.  He didn’t even know that it was the 14th intake until later.  ANZAC day “Tink” was talking to a chap who said he joined LEEUWIN in 1966 as a JR.  This turned out to be Spud Murphy. Having a box of memorabilia that been had carefully stowed away.  This is when he was enlightened that he was a member of the 14th Intake at LEEUWIN.  He remembered that Chris Barnes and Peter Butler were South Aussies as well. Tink was determined to get a reunion of some sort off the ground. He was even more convinced, so the big hunt was on for other members of the intake. Took names from the passing out book, then searched the electoral rolls, phone books, with an ever-increasing phone bill over next six months, which is something he will not forget. Along with Pete Butler, the decision was made to try having a reunion in Perth if there was enough interest.  Peter contacted the Navy to get a list of the intake, which showed the first names, service numbers and ranks upon discharge. Peter and Christine Butler then did the hard yards in contacting as many members that they had addresses for, taking return mail and phone calls. It was deemed that a reunion could go ahead.  With this team in Adelaide it was very difficult to organise something in Fremantle, but then help arrived with Alan Cartwright, Pete Morrow and others from the West. In the meantime, Graham Wakefield had suggested that a newspaper would be a good idea, so in true naval tradition he was volunteered to do the job.

1997

The First Reunion was held at the Tradewinds Hotel, Canning Highway, Fremantle, Perth WA, near LEEUWIN over the weekend of 30 May to 1 June 1997.  The reunion organising committee was set up in WA, which comprised Alan Cartwright, Pete Morrow and Eddie Mueller. Friday night was a greet and meet fellow members, some of whom had not seen each other since December 1966, when we left LEEUWIN to join our first ships. On Saturday morning we had a bus trip around the various places of interest and old haunts that we frequented in Fremantle and Perth. On Saturday night we had a formal dinner where long lost friends chatted and reformed friendships that first started in January 1966.  Peter Butler took to the podium and a meeting was held to see if those present would like to form an Association. After much debate it was decided to go ahead and an interim committee was elected with a charter to develop a constitution and fees payable.

On Sunday we visited LEEUWIN, where lunch was held.  A walk around the base, now run by the Army brought back memories of life back in 1966.  We saw the parade ground, school block, location of the old dongas, the new blocks, sport fields and the changes to the base since we had left. The Sydney connection of Dave Kelleher, Andy Mills and Chris Mitchell in July started planning the reunion for 1998 in Sydney.  The original idea was to hold it in conjunction with Navy Week and the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Fleet Arm, in order to have as many as possible from the intake in Sydney. Graham Wakefield edited and sent out the first Newsletter in July.

 1998

The Second Reunion took place in Sydney over the weekend of 23 to 26 October 1998. Held at the Mecure Lawson Hotel, Ultimo NSW.  The format was similar to what the WA group had organized.  Friday was a greet and meet. On Saturday morning, a bus trip around Sydney, visit Garden Island and SUCCESS (II), Harry’s Cafe de Wheels.  Over and under the harbour via the bridge and tunnel. On Saturday evening a formal dinner and dance was held.  During the course of the evening, an Annual General Meeting was held to see if the 14th Intake Association was to be formed. All in attendance approved this. The first committee was duly elected.  The chairperson was Tink Tancock.

The Third Reunion was held at the Senior Sailors Mess at CERBERUS, Crib Point Victoria over the weekend of 15 to 17 October 1999.  A similar format as the last two reunions was the order of events.  Friday night was a get acquainted night. On Saturday morning a boat trip out into Western Port Bay with chicken and champagne for lunch.  On return to CERBERUS, visited the Seamanship School with its modern facilities for training the Bosun Mate category.  From there visited the CERBERUS Museum, the parade ground and the two churches nearby. On Saturday evening was a dinner dance, with an AGM for the Association.

During the AGM there was much debate over reunions, the timings and having a female representive on the committee.  It was suggested to formalise the history of the 14th Intake that a draft be ready for 2001 and a document formalised by 2006, the 40th Anniversary of joining the navy. Chris Mitchell and Rod Withers were on it.   Brenton Tancock was confirmed with life membership for all of his efforts in getting the association up and running.

 2001

The Reunion was held on the Gold Coast from 19 to 22 October 2001.  Originally Paul “Judge” Reilly and Monte Cavanagh were organising the event but due to ill heath early in the year, they had to stand down. Steve Boyle took over at very short notice, organising the running of the reunion. The numbers were down due to the ANSETT Airline crash on 19 September. The format was the same as previous reunions.  Friday night was a get to know each other, especially, those that had not attended before.  This was held in a little RSL at Mudgeeraba.

2003
